Annotation
The course introduces principles and functions of digital telecommunications systems, both transmission and switching systems as well as converged packet-oriented systems interconnected into universal telecommunication networks.
Study targets
The course will allow students to understand the principles of large telecommunication networks, particularities of access and backbone networks as well as fixed and mobile systems. After completing the course, students will be knowledgeable in telecommunication technologies and networks and they will be able to solve partial problems related with the operation of currently used technologies.

1. Telecommunication channels, digital signal transmission, theory of information.
2. Type of telecommunication networks, telecommunication and data networks.
3. Telephone communications methods, digitalization of voice signal.
4. Hierarchy of transmission systems SDH, OTH, Ethernet
5. Examples of transmission systems and their parameters
6. Access networks, types, xDSL connections
7. Switching systems, generations, classic telephone connections
8. Signaling in networks, next generation network, VoIP technology
9. Quality of service, trends in telecommunication networks and services, cloud computing
10. Mobile networks, types, generations, transmission of voice signal and data, radio spectrum monitoring
11. Principles of modulation and access to medium in cellular networks
12. Principles of communication and signaling in 2G mobile networks
13. Principles of communication and signaling in 3G mobile networks
14. Introduction to 4G mobile networks.
