I) The B2 English Exam is a compulsory subject for all Faculty of Electrical Engineering students at the Czech Technical University. According to the Study and Examination Rules and Regulations for Students at CTU (Part III, Article 4), a compulsory subject is one “whose completion is a necessary condition in order to successfully complete the study programme.” In addition, this requires the “passing of an examination evaluated on the scale A, B, C, D, or E…” (SERR Part III, Article 6).


II) According to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), an international standard for describing language ability, the definition of an English language learner who has achieved the B2 (Upper-Intermediate) level is one who “…can understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in his/her field of specialisation. Can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party. Can produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.”


III) Students who have successfully passed an approved international exam within the past five years may present their certificate to the Department of Languages, Faculty of Electrical Engineering. Upon approval, students are then exempt from both the Written Test and the Oral Part. For a list of approved international exams go to the department website: http://jazyky.fel.cvut.cz/

I) The B2 Exam is a "compulsory subject," as discussed above.

II) In addition, students who achieve a final grade / mark of 70% or more on the B0B04B2Z Anglický jazyk B2-zkouška – B2 English Exam [starting from Winter 2021/2022] may request a Confirmation of Language Level Certificate, which is intended to show language proficiency for those applying for an Erasmus (or similar) study programme.

III) The CEFR level indication on individual certificates is determined at the discretion of the Language Department. The CEFR level indicated on certificates will reflect only the result of the Written Examination. All parts of the exam must be complete according to all instructions.

IV) Send requests to BcA. Michael Ynsua at: ynsuamic@fel.cvut.cz This certificate will be accepted by the International Office at the Rectorate, CTU in Prague, as proof of appropriate language level and may be included in the application file submitted by students.
Requests are to be addressed to Mr. Ynsua and should include date of birth (format = day / month / year).

In the Written Exam students will be assessed on their abilities in the following skills:

A) LISTENING (1 Parts – 5 Points Total):

1) PART 1 (5 Points) Short Lecture with Comprehension Questions (multiple choice)


B) READING (2 Parts – 20 Points Total):

1) PART 1 (10 Points) Short Text with missing words

2) PART 2 (10 Points) Text with Comprehension Questions (multiple choice)


C) GRAMMAR & VOCABULARY (6 Parts – 45 Points Total):

1) PART 1 (10 points) Prepositions (Gapfill – fill in the correct missing word)

2) PART 2 (10 points) Gerund or Infinitive (Gapfill – fill in the correct missing word)

3) PART 3 (5 points) Countable / Uncountable (multiple choice)

4) PART 4 (5 points) Modal Verbs (multiple choice)

5) PART 5 (5 points) Relative Pronouns (multiple choice)

6) PART 6 (10 points) Academic Vocabulary (Gapfill – fill in the correct form of the word)


D) WRITING (3 Parts – 20 Points Total):

1) PART 1 (15 points) Key Word Sentence Transformations: A complete sentence followed by a KEY WORD and a second sentence which has a gap in it (2 – 5 words). Students have to use the KEY WORD to complete the second sentence so that it means the same as the first sentence.

2) PART 2 (5 points) Recognizing the Parts of a Paragraph: Sentences for an academic paragraph that must be put into the proper order – 2 of the sentences do not belong and are to be ignored.

3) PART 3 (0 points) Academic Writing CHOOSE ONE (A or B)
A) = A descriptive academic-style text (MAPS)
B)= A descriptive academic-style text (PROCESS)

The ACADEMIC WRITING SECTION (PART 3) of the exam is primarily used to assess* the overall result based on the percentage achieved in the LISTENING, READING, GRAMMAR & VOCABULARY and WRITING (PARTS 1 & 2) sections.
E.G., 70% (on the LISTENING, READING, GRAMMAR & VOCABULARY and WRITING (PARTS 1 & 2) sections) = B1 / B2 BORDERLINE
Does the ACADEMIC WRITING SECTION (PART 3) show that student’s abilities to be BELOW, AT or ABOVE that level?

The FINAL MARK is based on this assessment*.
* The SAME EXAM is used for those who would like to request a Confirmation of Written English Language Level Certificate (used to fulfil the language requirements portion of the Erasmus application process). ANY student in need of a confirmation certificate for an Erasmus (or similar) study program MUST COMPLETE ALL PARTS the of the exam – including the ACADEMIC WRITING SECTION (PART 3).

All students MUST fulfil their B0B04B1K B1 klasifikovaný zápočet BEFORE they can register for the B0B04B2Z WRITTEN EXAM (a student might be able to register for the subject without this – HOWEVER – it may NOT be possible to select a day/time for the actual exam until this requirement has been fulfilled).
